For more than 10 years, Centex has supported Habitat for Humanity. As a result of our support, Habitat has been able to build more than 200 homes for qualified, low-income families -- nearly 50 in just the past year. Centex donates about $1 million annually to Habitat in cash, building materials, construction management support and skilled labor from many of our employees.
In 2006, Centex was a major sponsor of Habitat's national Home Builders Blitz. In a typical demonstration of Centex's can-do ability and spirit, one of our divisions built a home in 24 hours. See the video by clicking HERE.
Our support for Habitat goes beyond a desire to help deserving families. By working together, Centex and Habitat are developing innovative approaches to dealing with the need to provide more affordable housing.
As the result of a unique collaboration with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and other partners, Centex is playing a vital role in constructing 30 homes for low-income families in the 600-home Bailey's Arbor neighborhood in Woodbury, MN, a fast-growing suburb in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The project presented numerous challenges, among them the fact that this would be a Habitat project that didn't utilize its large and enthusiastic volunteer corps nor include the 300-500 hours of "sweat equity" required of Habitat home buyers. But Habitat is developing new ways for these homeowners to contribute sweat equity, and other challenges were also overcome to create a beautiful new neighborhood while meeting the need for more affordable housing.
